Navaratri
Maha Vizha
A period of intense spiritual awakening, empowering women and invoking the universal grace of Mother Adi Parashakti.
A Divine Celebration of Shakti
Navaratri at Melmaruvathur is not just a festival; it is a period of intense spiritual awakening. Under the guidance of Arulthiru Bangaru Adigalar (Amma), the Peedam celebrates the Divine Mother Adi Parashakti through unique rituals that break traditional barriers.
The Empowerment of Women
A hallmark of Melmaruvathur is the central role given to women (Sakthis). While many traditions limit major rituals to men, here women take the lead in:
- Organizing and executing Navaratri activities.
- Performing the Abhishekam (ritual bathing) and Alankaram.
- Leading continuous prayers, symbolizing Shakti in every woman.

Key Rituals & Significance
Aganda Deepam
The "Infinite Flame" lit on Day 1 and kept burning for 9 nights. It represents the undivided light of wisdom (Gnana Jyothi).
Laksharchana
A supreme Yagna where the Mother's names are chanted to reach 100,000 counts. The collective vibration dissolves ego.
Abhishekam
Devotees directly enter the sanctum to bathe the Swayambu with milk, honey, and sandalwood.
Mukkoottu Ennai
A sacred blend of Ghee, Neem oil, and Gingelly oil. Burning this oil purifies the air, removes "Drishthi" (evil eye), and burns away negative qualities (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas).
Kaapu (Protection)
A sacred yellow thread tied around the wrist. It marks the start of a vow (Vratham) and signals that the devotee is under the direct protection of Mother Adi Parashakti.
Thondu (Service)
Devotees perform Karma Yoga by preparing Turmeric/Kumkum, serving food (Annadhanam), and maintaining the temple cleanliness during the festival.
